The Tun Tavern

Drawing of the old Tun Tavern, Philadelphia.

The Tun Tavern was a brew house built in 1685 near what is today known as Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. It is known as one of the first brew houses in the country, and its name is derived from the old English word "tun" meaning a barrel or keg of beer. The proprietor of the tavern in the early 1740s changed the name of the restaurant and served such distinguished guests as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin.
