Bucknell Wilderness Experience
Do
we get to shower?
Every day BuckWilders get to bathe in natural pools of water that
are close to the campsites. It is even better than a shower!
Is
it ok if I do not have/can't bring a backpack or other camping equipment?
Yes. Backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, water bottles, cups,
bowls, and spoons can be borrowed from Great Hollow Wilderness School.
BuckWilders who need any of these items will receive them once they
arrive at GHWS. Additionally, GHWS provides all food, cooking utensils,
and shelters to everyone.
If
we choose to go on the trails, does our backpack need to have enough
empty space to put gear and food in it?
Yes. You will be required to carry all food, cooking gear, and sleeping
gear with you along with your own personal items. Communal items
will be dispersed evenly amongst all members of the hiking group.
How
much weight will I have to carry in a pack?
There are many factors that will influence this. You will have to
carry everything that you bring, so the less you bring the less
your pack will weigh. It is also dependant upon the dynamics of
the group as some people can carry more than others. The average
pack will be between 30-40 lbs.
Should
I hike or do something beforehand to get ready?
It is a good idea to condition your body for the hike beforehand.
Just going for walks around your neighborhood is sufficient. You
do not need to hike in the woods. If your boots are not worn in
(brand new), it is also a good idea to wear them around whenever
possible. This will decrease the likelihood of getting blisters.
Wear them for short periods of time at first and then increase the
length of time as the boots start to break in.
Do
I need to bring everything on the equipment list?
Not necessarily. Bring as many clothes as you feel necessary but
no more than what is on the equipment list.
