GENUS Nesophontes

Author:Anthony, 1916.
Citation:Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 35: 725.
Type Species:Nesophontes edithae Anthony, 1916.
Comments:All species of Nesophontes appear to have survived the late Pleistocene extinction, at least five species are known to have existed into post-Columbian times. Morgan and Woods (1986) concluded that several species survived until the early part of the 18th century, and Fischer (1977) suggested an even more recent survival. However, recent attempts to locate living representatives in the Dominican Republic were unsuccessful (MacPhee et al., 1999). Includes undescribed species from the Cayman Isls which were found in post-Columbian deposits (Morgan, 1994, 1996; Morgan and Woods, 1986; Varona, 1974).
