Located in downtown Sunbury, this palustrine wetland is a
rare ecosystem in the middle of an urban setting. It's
origin is unknown, but its location on a floodplain
terrace on the east side of Susquehanna River valley
suggests a natural origin. It is shown on the National
Wetland Inventory maps.
Hydrologically, it appears to be a through-flow wetland,
perched on organic-rich fines overlying coarse river
gravels. The elevation of the surrounding ground surface
is approximately 243 ft, which is about 20 feet above the
average level of the Susquehanna River at Shamokin Dam.
