From 1983 to 1986, the Georgian exterior of the library was renovated. An addition was constructed in the back of the building, creating two lower levels. The archives and special collections department was located on lower level one.The interior of the original building was also renovated. The reference department was moved to the former first floor reading room of the orgiinal building. A traditional reading room was created, which was used for meetings other special occassions. The periodical department was moved to the second floor of the original building.A circular staircase was built at the juncture of the the origninal library and the new addition. As a result of the expansion, seating capacity was increased from 350 to 1,100, and the total amount of available space more than doubled. The windows from the old building were integrated into the new structure, and the original back door was converted into a free-standing sculpture on the second floor. The total cost of the addition/renovation was $8.2 million.
