SPECIES Peromyscus winkelmanni

Author:Carleton, 1977.
Citation:Occas. Pap. Mus. Zool., Univ. Michigan, 675: 2.
Common Name:Coalcomán Deermouse
Type Locality:México, Michoacán, 6.3 mi (= 10.1 km, by road) WSW Dos Aguas, 8000 ft (2438 m).
Distribution:Isolated localities in the Sierra de Coalcomán, Michoacán, and in the Sierra Madre del Sur, Guerrero, México.
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Comments:P. aztecus species group. Karyotype reported by Smith et al. (1989); relationships evaluated by Bradley and Schmidly (1987), Sullivan and Kilpatrick (1991), and Sullivan et al. (1997). The occurrence of the species in Guerrero, as reported in several studies (e.g., Smith et al., 1989; Sullivan and Kilpatrick, 1991; Sullivan et al., 1997), seems biogeographically implausible; identification of these vouchers should be reconfirmed (We were unsuccessful in trying to locate them). Removed to aztecus species group by Carleton (1989), an allocation supported by other evidence (e.g., Sullivan et al., 1997; Tiemann-Boege et al., 2000).
