SPECIES Peromyscus pectoralis

Author:Osgood, 1904.
Citation:Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash., 17: 59.
Common Name:White-ankled Deermouse
Type Locality:México, Querétaro, Jalpan.
Distribution:SE New Mexico and C Texas, USA, south along the Mexican Plateau and Cordillera Oriental to N Jalisco and Hidalgo, México.
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Species group indeterminate. Although traditionally arranged as a member of the boylii species group (Carleton, 1989; Hooper, 1968; Osgood, 1909), a robust variety of other systematic data leaves the matter of its affinity as unresolved (e.g., Rogers et al., 1984; Sullivan and Kilpatrick, 1991; Tiemann-Boege et al., 2000). Revised by Schmidly (1972), who recognized three subspecies that correspond to patterns of genetic differentiation (Kilpatrick and Zimmerman, 1976); consanguinity of included populations nevertheless suspect (see Avise et al., 1974). See Schmidly (1974, Mammalian Species, 49).
