Common Name:Western Woolly Lemur
Type Locality:Madagascar, Ambondrobe, NE of Bombetoka Bay, ca. 1538S, 4624E (according to lectotype selection by Thalmann and Geissmann, 2000).
Distribution:Madagascar: Betsiboka River north as far as Mahajamba or Sofia Rivers, perhaps to Maevarano River.
Status:CITES Appendix I; U.S. ESA Endangered; IUCN Vulnerable.
Comments:Rumpler et al. (1990) suggested that occidentalis may be a distinct species, and they were followed by Thalmann and Geissmann (2000), who drew attention to a population in the Bemaraha district at 1859S, 4445E, which they suggested is likely to represent a further, undescribed species.
