SPECIES Rhipidomys couesi

Author:J. A. Allen and Chapman, 1893.
Citation:Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 5: 214.
Common Name:Coues’ Rhipidomys
Type Locality:Trinidad, 7 mi (11 km) SE Princes Town and 12 mi (19 km) N of the southern coast.
Distribution:Moist lowland forest that follows an arc from Trinidad, through N and WC Venezuela, to C Colombia (Meta).
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:R. leucodactylus section sensu Tribe (1996). Cabrera (1961) identified couesi as a subspecies of R. sclateri. As emphasized by its original describer Thomas (1887b), sclateri closely resembles Peruvian R. leucodactylus, and, in both Venezuela (see Handley, 1976) and Perú, R. couesi and R. leucodactylus are morphologically distinct.
