Geographic variation assessed, as Bolomys lasiurus, by Macêdo and Mares (1987), who retained only fuscinus and lasiurus as subspecies. The validity of listed synonyms very much needs confirmation: e.g., the taxon arviculoides is considered a species by some (Cabrera, 1961; Gyldenstolpe, 1932; Ximénez & Langguth, 1970), or reallocated to lasiurus by others (Macêdo and Mares, 1987; Reig, 1978, 1987), while Galliari and Pardiñas (2000) passingly mention it as another species related to N. obscurus.
