SPECIES Akodon (Akodon) mystax

Author:Hershkovitz, 1998.
Citation:Bonn Zool. Beitr., 47: 220.
Common Name:Caparaó Akodont
Type Locality:Brazil, Minas Gerais, Pico da Bandeira, W slope Mt Caparaó, Arrozal, 2300 m.
Distribution:Known only from highland localities, 2000-2700 m, in Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil.
Comments:Subgenus Akodon, A. boliviensis species group (Hershkovitz, 1990c) or A. cursor species group (Geise et al., 2001). Described as related to A. sanctipaulensis, A. lindberghi, and A. azarae (Hershkovitz, 1998), but gene-sequence data suggest closer affinity to A. cursor A. montensis (Geise et al., 2001). Status with respect to A. paranaensis and to A. reigi, which are morphologically very similar and have the same diploid number (Christoff et al., 2000; González et al., 1998), should be reviewed and their morphological definition and distributional limits as three separate species verified.
