Malkovich: "It's more personal...SS like Lee defies all the things we're told we have to do to be successful. He spent years in a loft picking his nose and writing really punk stuff with Patti Smith and then he wins a Pulitzer. He's like Austin when he shrugs off his writing to go make all these movies but then he'll turn around and like trash Paapp(?) in the NYT that's such a Lii-like thing to do. Lee is the side of SS that's always being strangled but never quite killed." A long run at the Cherry Run which Nancy and I saw and got to talk with the actors. With many repalcements also produced in London under the direction of filmmaker John Schlesinger and the PBS series American playhouse in Jan 1984.
SS vows he will never do anything else in NYC and claims that he paid off Joe Papp the money fronted for upcoming productions. SEE the Bancroft Library xerox for the other side of the story which is an interview with Joe Papp who claims that SS never paid him back.
