Lincoln and His Son Tad

Lincoln and his son, Tad.

Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln had a fourth son born on April 4, 1853, who they named Thomas. He was named after Thomas Lincoln, Lincoln's father, who had died in 1853. The boy's nickname was "Tad," because of his unusually large head at birth. His father, seeing his son's large head and tiny baby body, saw a resemblance to a tadpole, a nickname that stuck with Tad for the rest of his life.
