  • About the image:Deathmask of Dante Alighieri from the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence

  • When Dante was nine years old, he first encountered Beatrice Portinari. He didn’t speak to her at this first meeting, but fell in love “at first sight.” Although the two saw each other frequently as they reached adolescence, the two only exchanged greetings in the street; Dante never knew her well. It is hard to understand the depth of Dante’s love for Beatrice, but that love had a great impact on the Italian stil novo poetical school. His love for Beatrice turned Love into the ideal theme of life, a theme that had not been emphasized before. Dante’s obsessive love became his reason for living, and for his poetry.
  • In order to further one’s political career, a man had to join a Corporazioni di Arti e Mestieri , a type of trade guild. Dante chose to become a doctor and pharmacist and joined the apothecaries’ guild. He never intended to practice these professions, but being a pharmacist was a good choice for Dante; at the time, books were sold out of pharmacies.
