In the fall of 1943, the University purchased the house located at 307 South Sixth Street from the Estate of Miss Jennie Blue for $6,000.00. (The side to the right in the photograph) In 1945, the Trustees authorized the purchase of the adjoining house, 309 South Sixth Street, which was owned by Professor Charles M Bond "…. at a price not to exceed seven thousand dollars." The adjoining houses were repaired and first used as a dormitory for women in 1946 In 1946, Stephens House was named for Rev. Leroy Stephens, Class of 1868, Board of Curators, 1871-1881, and Trustee, 1882-1922. It was used continuously as a residence for twenty -eight women until it was razed in the fall of 1965.
