O
ld Main
This photograph shows Old Main and its west wing from the quadrangle side of the building. There was a pipe fence which enclosed the area in front of Old Main. Attached to the pipes was a wire mesh, attached to which were the climbing vines visible in the photograph. Four college men are visible in the right foreground. Note the height of the third floor of the central part of the building, which contained the commencement hall, and also the wooden enclosure around the front door. This photograph is undated, but a photo with which it is mounted shows a man standing in front of the Carnegie Library so it was taken sometime between 1905, when the library was completed, and 1932, when the central part of Old Main was completely destroyed by fire. In 1915, ivy covered both wings and the central part of the building on the quadrangle side.
