SPECIES Sorex (Otisorex) alaskanus
Author: | Merriam, 1900. | Citation: | Proc. Wash. Acad. Sci., 2: 18. | Common Name: | Glacier Bay Water Shrew | Type Locality: | USA, Alaska, Glacier bay, Point Gustavus. | Distribution: | Known only from the type locality. | Status: | IUCN – Lower Risk (lc). | Comments: | Subgenus Otisorex; S. vagrans complex. The species was tentatively included in palustris by Junge and Hoffmann (1981) and Harris (in Wilson and Ruff, 1999), but retained as a species by Hall (1981), Jones et al. (1982), and George (1988); a view supported by the skull figures and measurements given by Jackson (1928) and Carraway (1995). Apparently the species has not been collected again since 1899. |
