Common Name:Mediterranean Water Shrew
Type Locality:Spain, Madrid Prov., Jarama River, San Martin de la Vega.
Distribution:Temperate woodlands of Europe, from Portugal to Poland and east to Voronesh, Russia; N Asia Minor and N Iran.
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Reviewed by Spitzenberger (1990b); European range mapped by Mitchell-Jones et al. (1999). Sorex amphibius Brehm, 1826 is probably an earlier name for the species (von Knorre, pers. comm.), although it has to be treated as a nomen oblitum. Karyotype from Spain to Turkey uniformly 2n = 52, FN = 98 (Zima et al., 1998).
