Common Name:Tapeti
Type Locality:"in America meridionali"; type locality restricted by Thomas (1911a), to Pernambuco, Brazil.
Distribution:S Tamaulipas (Mexico) southward through Central and South America as far as Peru, Bolivia, N Argentina and S Brazil.
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Subgenus Tapeti (Gureev, 1964:160); he also considered gabbi, which is included here, a distinct species. Formerly included dicei; revised by Diersing (1981). Two different karyotypes reported, by Guerena-Gandara et al. (1983) (2n=36; FN=68) and by Lorenzo and Cervantes (1995) (2n=40; FN=76). Allozymes described by Cervantes et al. (1999a).
