SPECIES Heliophobius argenteocinereus

Author:Peters, 1846.
Citation:Bericht Verhandl. K. Preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 11: 259.
Common Name:Silvery Mole-rat
Type Locality:Mozambique, Tete (on the Zambezi River).
Distribution:Zimbabwe, E Zambia, and N Mozambique to Dem. Rep. Congo, Kenya, and N Tanzania.
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Comments:Honeycutt et al. (1991:54-55) concluded that the characters used to separate H. spalax from H. argenteocinereus are due to age variation, and that the genus is monotypic. See also de Graaff (1975, 1981) who considered the species polytypic with nine subspecies. Karyotype of specimens from Kenya has 2n=60 and FN=114 (George, 1979b) whereas specimens from Zambia have 2n=62 and FN=114 (Scharff et al., 2001).
