GENUS Xenuromys

Author:Tate and Archbold, 1941.
Citation:Am. Mus. Novit., 1101: 3.
Type Species:Mus barbatus Milne-Edwards, 1900.
Comments:PogonomysDivision. Member of the New Guinea Old Endemics (Musser, 1981c). Generally regarded as morphologically similar to Uromys and phylogenetically related to it (Flannery, 1995a; Tate, 1951; Watts and Baverstock, 1994a), but sperm morphology is unlike most members of our Uromys Division and resembles many forms in our Pogonomys Division (Breed and Aplin, 1994). Our allocation to the latter cluster is provisional and must be tested by phylogenetic analyses of gene sequences and other kinds of morphological character sets.
