SPECIES Necromys obscurus

Author:Waterhouse, 1837.
Citation:Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1837: 16.
Common Name:Dark-furred Akodont
Type Locality:Uruguay, Maldonado Dept., Maldonado.
Distribution:Isolated populations along coastal areas in S Uruguay (obscurus) and Buenos Aires Prov., EC Argentina (scagliarum).
Status:IUCN – Lower Risk (lc) as Bolomys obscurus.
Comments:Type species of Cabreramys (Massoia and Fornes, 1967), a taxon considered a junior synonym of Bolomys by Reig (1978, 1987) and of Necromys by Massoia and Pardiñas (1993). Formerly contained benefactus as a subspecies (see above account). Geographic variation and allopatric distribution in light of late Pleistocene climatic changes discussed by Galliari and Pardiñas (2000). The strong morphometric differentiation between and probable long-term isolation of the named populations, as demonstrated by the latter authors, recommend reconsideration of their status using other information sources.
