GENUS Phaner

Author:Gray, 1870.
Citation:Cat. Monkeys, Lemurs, Fruit-eating Bats Brit. Mus.: 135.
Type Species:Lemur furcifer Blainville, 1839.
Comments:Placed in a separate subfamily, Phanerinae, by Rumpler (1974) and by McKenna and Bell (1997); but the evidence that they are the sister clade to other Cheirogaleidae is incomplete. Groves and Tattersall (1991) described three new subspecies, which were raised to species rank by Groves (2001c).
