William E. Martin was born in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1848. He entered the Univeristy at Lewisburg in 1868, and he graduated in 1871. After graduation, he became an instructor in Latin in the Academy; two years later, he became the Principal of the Academy. In 1887, after the death of Professor Francis W. Tustin, Principal Martin was named by the Alumni Association to be the chairman of the committee to raise funds for the gymnasium for men. In 1894, he was made a professor in the College in the newly created Department of Logic and Anthropology. Professor Martin remained a member of this department until his death, but the name of the department changed several times during the administration of President Harris: Department of Logic and Sociology (1901-1902); Department of Sociology (1904-1905 ); and, by 1913-1914, the Department of Sociology and Logic. Although he had no professional training in librarianship, Professor Martin also served as librarian from 1894 until his death in 1922. He is buried in the Lewisburg Cemetery. |
