lewellyn Phillips
Llewellyn Phillips was born in Merthytl Tydvil, Wales, in 1869. At the age of fourteen, he entered the Academy and prepared for college under the direction of William E. Martin, who was then Principal. He completed the classical course of study and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University in 1892. After graduation, he became Instructor in the Greek Language in the Academy, where William E. Martin was still Principal. In 1893, he received a Master of Arts degree from Bucknell. During the summer of 1893, he was at Cornell University taking work in elocution, and he spent the summers of 1894 and 1895 at the University of Chicago, where he studied elocution and oratory. In the mid-1890's Phillips became an Instructor in Elocution in the College, and in 1896 he was ordained a Baptist minister. He continued to pursue graduate work at both Harvard University and the University of Berlin, in Germany. In 1902, Rev. Phillips became a professor of elocution and rhetoric in the College; and in 1916, he was appointed Professor of Education. Two years later he became Dean of the University, but he retained his professorship in education. He died in Lewisburgh in 1923.
