Common Name:Nilgai
Type Locality:No locality cited; restricted to "plains of Peninsular India" (Lydekker, 1914b:227).
Distribution:India, Nepal (Terai), and E Pakistan; introduced into Texas (USA).
Status:IUCN – Least Concern.
Comments:Antilope tragocamelus Pallas, 1766, was based on accounts of the "tragelaphus" by Caius, Gesner and Ray and on Parsons' (1745) description of a male nilgai in London (here designated the lectotype), which had first been "brought to Bengal, from a very remote part of the Mogul's Dominions".
