Monotypic member of the New Guinea Old Endemics and a close morphological relative of Pogonomelomys (our research). Our allocation of Abeomelomys to the Pogonomys cluster is provisional pending a wider phylogenetic inquiry into New Guinea murines incorporating molecular and qualitative morphological data. Sperm morphology of Abeomelomys is distinctive and unlike that typical of Uromys and its allies in our Uromys Division (Breed and Aplin, 1994) or Coccymys and Pogonomelomys with which Abeomelomys has been associated in the past (Breed and Aplin, 1994; Musser and Breed, ms). |
