GENUS Scapteromys

Author:Waterhouse, 1837.
Citation:Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1837: 20.
Type Species:Mus tumidus Waterhouse, 1837.
Comments:Akodontini. Hershkovitz (1966c) viewed Scapteromys as the cognate of Kunsia, a close kinship supported by phylogenetic investigations of gene-sequence data, but not including Bibimys as third member of a scapteromyine tribe sensu Massoia (1979b, 1980a) (see D’Elía, 2003; D’Elía et al. 2003; Smith and Patton, 1999). Hershkovitz (1966c) removed tomentosus and fronto to Kunsia, and Massoia (1980a) transferred chacoensis and labiosus to Bibimys. Karyology summarized by Gardner and Patton (1976) and Brum-Zorilla et al. (1986). Fossil occurrences (late Pliocene through Holocene) documented by Reig (1994) and Pardiñas (1996, 1999). Generic revision required to consolidate the morphological basis for specific discrimination and to vouch geographic occurrences. Also see accounts of Bibimys and Kunsia.
