GENUS Theropithecus

Author:I. Geoffroy, 1841.
Actual Date:1843
Citation:Arch. Mus. Hist. Nat. Paris, 1841(2): 576.
Type Species:Macacus gelada Rüppell, 1835.
Comments:Considered a distinct genus by Cronin and Meikle (1979:259), but Van Gelder (1977b:8) included this genus in Cercopithecus; Goodman et al. (1998) included it in Papio as a subgenus. McKenna and Bell (1997) placed it in a subtribe, Theropithecina, separate from Macacina (Macaca) and Papionina (all other genera of Papionini).
