SPECIES Cephalophus niger
Author: | Gray, 1846. | Citation: | Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., [ser. 1], 18: 165. | Common Name: | Black Duiker | Type Locality: | "Guinea" but apparently Ghana, Shama (see comments). | Distribution: | Rainforest zone, in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria (west of lower Niger River), Sierra Leone, and Togo. No record from Benin. | Status: | IUCN – Lower Risk (nt). | Comments: | The type of niger came from the Leiden Museum, one of a series from Chama (= Shama) and Dabocrom, Ghana, including the syntypes of pluto. Only the specimens from Dabocrom were retained in Leiden (Jentink, 1892) so presumably the type is from Shama. |
