Common Name:Sable
Type Locality:"asia septentrionali," restricted by Thomas (1911a) to "N. Asia." Restricted by Ognev (1931:562) to "Tobol'skaya gub. v ee severnoi chasti" ["northern part of Tobol'sk Province" (1962 translation)] [Russia].
Distribution:China (Xinjiang to NE), Japan (Hokkaido); Mongolia, North Korea, Russia (Ural Mtns to Siberia, Kamchatka, Sakhalin).
Status:IUCN – Data Deficient as M. z. brachyura, otherwise Lower Risk (lc).
Comments:Reviewed by Pavlinin (1966). May be conspecific with americana, martes, and melampus (Anderson, 1970; Hagmeier, 1961). Heptner et al. (1967) included Japanese and Korean melampus in zibellina. Synonyms allocated according to Heptner et al. (1967). Stone and Cook (2002) placed it in the subgenus Martes.
