Common Name:Swan Island Hutia
Type Locality:"Little Swan Island, one of the two small islands lying at the entrance of the Gulf of Honduras".
Distribution:Little Swan Isl.
Status:IUCN – Extinct; Clough (1976) stated that thoracatus became extinct in 1950s, possibly as a result of introduced cats on the island.
Comments:Sometimes included as a subspecies of G. brownii; see Mohr (1939:77), Hall (1981:866), and Varona (1974:67). Morgan (1985) reconfirmed its status as a distinct species. Reviewed by Morgan (1989a, Mammalian Species No. 341).
