SPECIES Praomys verschureni

Author:Verheyen and Van der Straeten, 1977.
Citation:Rev. Zool. Afr., 91: 739.
Common Name:Verschuren’s Praomys
Type Locality:Dem. Rep. Congo, Orientale, Mamiki.
Distribution:Known only from NE Dem. Rep. Congo (eastern edge of Central African high forest block).
Status:IUCN – Near Threatened as Malacomys verschureni.
Comments:Described as a species of Malacomys and all published information referenced under that taxonomic combination. Original description was based on one specimen (Verheyen and Van der Straeten, 1977), and the species is still represented by very few examples (Dieterlen and Van der Straeten, 1984; Robbins and Van der Straeten, 1982). Chromosomal information reported by Robbins and Van der Straeten (1982). Analyses of complete mtDNA cytochrome b sequences placed P. verschureni near Myomyscus yemeni and not species of Praomys (Lecompte et al., 2002b), but nuclear IRBP gene sequences alligned it with species of Praomys (E. Lecompte, in litt., 2002). See account of P. lukolelae.
