SPECIES Gerbillus (See comments.) burtoni

Author:F. Cuvier, 1838.
Citation:Trans. Zool. Soc. Lond., 2: 145, pl. 25.
Common Name:Burton’s Gerbil
Type Locality:Sudan, Dharfur.
Distribution:Known only from the type locality.
Status:IUCN – Critically Endangered.
Comments:Usually treated as a synonym of G. pyramidum (Pavlinov et al., 1990; also see references in Lay, 1983), but Lay (1983) mustered diagnostic cranial traits seen in the original cranial illustrations that appear to distinguish them. Until a critical revision of the G. pyramidum complex defines the status of burtoni, we retain it as a species following Lay.
