Common Name:Major’s Tufted-tailed Rat
Type Locality:Madagascar, Fianarantsoa Prov., Ambohimitambo forest, 4500 ft (1372 m).
Distribution:Middle to upper montane forest, 1000-2000 m, E Madagascar, from Montagne d’Ambre in the north to the Anosyenne Mountains in the south.
Status:IUCN – Endangered.
Comments:Morphologically similar to and presumably closely related with E. penicillatus (Carleton, 1994).
