U.S. ESA – Candidate taxon as S. b. endemicus, Threatened as S. b. brunneus; IUCN - Critically Endangered as S. b. brunneus, Vulnerable as S. b. endemicus; otherwise Endangered as S. brunneus. | Comments: | Subgenus Spermophilus (Hall, 1981:385). Includes endemicus, which "may be reaching species-level separation" (Yensen, 1991:597). Included in clade which also contains canus and mollis. Population genetics analyzed by Gavin et al., 1999.
