SPECIES Avahi occidentalis
Author: | von Lorenz-Liburnau, 1898. | Citation: | Abh. Senckenb. Naturf. Ges., 21: 452. | Common Name: | Western Woolly Lemur | Type Locality: | Madagascar, Ambondrobe, NE of Bombetoka Bay, ca. 15°38’S, 46°24’E (according to lectotype selection by Thalmann and Geissmann, 2000). | Distribution: | Madagascar: Betsiboka River north as far as Mahajamba or Sofia Rivers, perhaps to Maevarano River. | Status: | CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Vulnerable. | Comments: | Rumpler et al. (1990) suggested that occidentalis may be a distinct species, and they were followed by Thalmann and Geissmann (2000), who drew attention to a population in the Bemaraha district at 18°59’S, 44°45’E, which they suggested is likely to represent a further, undescribed species. |
