W Course Procedures for Faculty

• Complete a W1 or W2 proposal form available online or in the Writing Center office, Roberts 200F. Please include a copy of the syllabus and any other course materials that will help the Composition Council understand how your course will fulfill the writing requirement. The Writing Center staff will gladly assist you in any stage of the W course proposal process.

• The Writing Center will forward your proposal to the Composition Council’s Approval Committee for review.

• When the Committee has approved your proposal, you will be notified by e-mail. If the Committee requests more information, you will have the opportunity to revise your proposal. If you wish, a Writing Center consultant will meet with you to review your proposal and to help you revise it. You may then resubmit it to the Committee for approval.

• Once your W course has been approved, it will be added to the W course database.

• Ideally, all W course proposals should be approved prior to the beginning of the semester in which the course will be offered. Submitting your proposal early will give you plenty of time to revise it should the Composition Council deem that necessary.

• In any case, no courses will be approved or added to the W course list for a given semester after that semester’s drop/add period ends. For example, if you want your course approved as a W course for the fall term, you need to submit your proposal no later than the end of the drop/add period for the fall term.

• Because writing-intensive courses require a pedagogical commitment, they are linked to the instructor, not the course number. Therefore, new and visiting faculty who intend to teach a W course must submit a new proposal, even if the course has traditionally been taught as a W course by other members of the department.

To ensure that your approved course is listed properly in any semester, please complete the following steps:

(1) On the Master Class Schedule, designate your course as a W course by checking the W1/W2 column.

(2) Inform your department chair that you are offering your course(s) as W1 and/or W2.

(3) The Writing Center will compile a preliminary W course list for the next semester and send it to all faculty several weeks prior to pre-registration and advising.

(4) Please review the preliminary list to make sure your W course is listed correctly. Please contact the Writing Center (wrtngctr@ bucknell.edu) immediately if:

(a) You do not find your W course listed.

(b) You see your W course listed but you are not offering it as a W course this semester.

(c) You notice any errors in your W course listing (course number, section, title, etc.).

(5) After a course has been approved as writing intensive, the instructor may in subsequent semesters decide to teach it without emphasizing its writing component. Because we give instructors this option, we do not automatically list courses as W courses from one semester to the next without their approval. Therefore, you will need to inform your department chair each semester that you intend to offer your course as a W course so that your chair can designate it as such on the Master Class Schedule. If your course is not designated as a W1 or a W2 on the Master Class Schedule, it will not be listed as such in our database or at the Registrar’s office.

Following these procedures will help us get the correct information to the students and the Registrar’s office. If you have any questions, please contact the Writing Center at 577-3141 or wrtngctr@bucknell.edu. We thank you for your cooperation.
