About the Writing Program

At Bucknell, writing instruction takes place in writing-intensive courses offered at all levels in all disciplines. “W1” courses offer a general introduction to college writing, while “W2” courses allow students to practice rhetorical conventions in particular disciplines. All Bucknell undergraduate students must successfully complete one W1 course and two W2 courses before graduating.

The Writing Program is administered by the Composition Council, a subcommittee of the Committee on Instruction. The Council's voting membership consists of six faculty members (including the Co-Director of the Writing Program), representing all divisions of the University, and a representative from ISR; one associate dean from each college and the Co-Director of the Writing Center serve as ex-officio, non-voting members. The Council meets regularly to evaluate W course proposals and to discuss policy relating to the Writing Program.

Tom Solomon, Associate Professor of Physics, is Co-Director of the Writing Program.

Deirdre O'Connor, Writing and Teaching Consultant, is Co-Director of the Writing Center.

Those who are interested in the history, administration and rationale of the Writing Program are welcome to read the Writing Program legislation.
