First New York production: New York Shakespeare Festival, Public Th., 23 Dec. 1980 (dir. Joseph Papp, replacing Woodruff after dispute).
Revived: Steppenwolf Th., Chicago, 1982, transferring to Cherry Lane Th., New York, 17 Oct. 1982 (dir. Gary Sinise; with Sinise as Austin, John Malkovich as Lee; a film of this production was shown on PBS Television, Jan. 1984).
First London production: Cottesloe Th., London, 10 Dec. 1981 (dir. John Schlesinger; with Antony Sher as Austin, Bob Hoskins as Lee).
