Russian Web sites use three types of Cyrillic font keyboard layouts. The most widely used font layout is found in the KOI8 fonts. These fonts combine Latin and Cyrillic alphabets so that you may use them for your regular Web use as well as browsing in Russia. However, they do not support the diacritics used in other common European languages like French and German, so you will have to choose between the two. Changing fonts in Netscape is so simple, this is not a problem.

Mac Fonts

There are several sites for downloading freeware and shareware Cyrillic fonts for MacIntoshes. The University of Oregon's Yamada Language Center offers a wide array of Cyrillic fonts for Macs and some PC fonts.

A package containing KOI8-R fonts and a keyboard driver designed for our on-line Russian reference grammar is available here.

PC Fonts

You may download the fonts matching those in the On-Line Russian Reference Grammar here. They are available in a self-extracting executable ZIP file.

The University of Novgorod has a wide variety of Internet Cyrillic fonts for Windows and DOS, too.

SovInfoBuro also has a site offering a variety of DOS and Windows True Type Fonts.

REESWeb, the Virtual Library of Russian and East European Studies Internet Resources, maintains a page with many links to Cyrillic fonts and other types of software.
