Lecture problem 19-4

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

Consider two large systems, A and B. If you add 50 J of energy to system A, the entropy would increase by an amount 0.25 J/K. Adding 100 J of energy to system B would increase its entropy by 0.25 J/K.

(a) Now these systems are coupled. Use probability arguments to determine which way energy will flow.

(b) Estimate the temperature of each system. Check that your result is consistent with part (a).
