Lecture 10, #3 - Angular Momentum and Right Hand Rules

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

A uniform disk of mass 5 kg and radius 2 m is spinning about its axis with an angular velocity of 3 rad/s, directed out of the page. The disk makes a circle (in the plane of the page) of radius 10 m. The total angular momentum of the disk (the sum of the spin angular momentum and the orbital angular momentum) is zero. Is the disk traveling clockwise or counterclockwise around the “orbit” of radius 10 m? How long does it take the disk to make one full “orbit”?

ANSWER:
Clockwise; 105 s
