Video Demonstration
3 minutes and 28 seconds running time.

Video Problem #1, Lecture #10: A student sits on the rotating chair used in lecture with the chair initially not rotating. The rotational intertia of the student and the chair combined is 3.2 kg-m². A baseball of mass 0.40 kg is thrown with the speed 12 m/s straight to a point 0.30 from the center of the chair and is caught by the student's outstretched hand.

a) Using the axis of rotation as reference, determine the magnitude of the angular momentum of the ball just before in comes into contact with the student's hand.

b) Determine the angular speed of the student after catching the baseball. Assume the baseball makes a negligible contribution to the rotational inertia.
