GERMAN 102

Everday Life in Germany
Alltagsleben in Deutschland

Elementary German II

Language and culture are inextricably linked: Listening to, speaking, reading, and writing German will serve as an entryway into the cultures of German-speaking countries. Throughout the semester you will practice expressing yourself and understanding others in both oral and written contexts. A comprehensive textbook supplemented with a workbook, web exercises, and a wide variety of in-class activities will facilitate your learning.

Learning Materials:

Participation means that you come to class prepared to participate actively in classroom learning activities. It does not mean that every sentence you utter has to be 100% correct. Learning a language takes time and you will make mistakes. The main thing is to learn from the mistakes you and the others in class make. Your willingness to take risks will pay off and you will soon find yourself able to communicate a number of things about yourself, your family, and other people and things around you.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is very important since the pace of the class is quite quick. If you have a good reason for not attending class, please let me know ahead of time, if possible. You can call my office (x71288) or send me an e-mail (hmorris@bucknell.edu). I will get in touch with you about what you are missing. On occasion, you may not have time to prepare for class. PLEASE come to class and let me know this at the beginning of the hour. It is better to be in class and at least hear German than to not come at all.

For every two unexcused absences your final grade will be lowered by a third of a letter grade.

Homework will take various forms: workbook assignments, web exercises, partner work, computer study modules, etc. You will not receive a grade per se for your homework. You will receive a Ö+, Ö, Ö-. Homework from the workbook should be done during the period we are working on that chapter. No workbook pages or worksheets from any given chapter will be accepted more than one class period after the exam for that chapter.

Ö+  means that you have understood the exercise. You should look over any mistakes you made to understand why your original answer was wrong. If you have questions, refer to the book or ask me for clarification.

Ö  means that you have a basic grasp of the concept but you need to be more consistent in applying it. Reread the pertinent section of the book or come to my office hours for further clarification.

Ö-  means that you should come to my office hours or make an appointment to see me. Learning a language is a building block task, so the sooner you clear up any problems, the easier learning the next concept will be.

Chapter Tests/Quizzes are meant to help you review the grammar concepts, the vocabulary, and the cultural items learned in a particular chapter. Tests will always be announced in advance. The format of the test will be based on exercises you have done as homework or activities we have done in class. In general, all tests will be graded according to the following scale:

93-100

A

90-92

A-

88-89

B+

82-87

B

80-81

B-

78-79

C+

72-77

C

70-71

C-

60-69

D

F

If I notice that this scale is not fair, I will make adjustments.

Oral Exercises will always be discussed ahead of time in class. They will be based on activities we have done in class and are meant to help you master common speaking situations.

Writing Assignments will be based on materials covered in class. You will write two drafts of every writing assignment. Your drafts should always be double-spaced. These writing assignments will provide you an opportunity to practice writing about yourself and the things around you. First drafts of all writing assignments must be handed in on the date in the daily homework. Your grade for the essay will be lowered one entire letter grade for every class the essay is late.

The following is an approximate schedule for the semester. Please see the homework assignments for daily assignments.
