Sunbury, A Proprietary Town:

Sunbury is one of seven Pennsylvania cities to be called Proprietary towns. These towns, which were surveyed and laid out by the proprietors, the Penn family, were built upon the Penn family’s personal property. All the propriety towns have several common features. Each is surrounded by a central square that is … The two main streets of each town was measured to be eighty feet wide, while all other streets were sixty feet wide, and the lanes and alleys were measured twenty feet across. Each propriety town serves a county seat and each was granted open land to be designated for public buildings, market places, and public burial grounds.
