Welcome to the history of Northumberland Borough, part of the Cultures at the Confluence web project in the Bucknell Environmental Center’s Humanities division.
This website details the history of Northumberland, Pennsylvania. The story begins with the European acquisition of land from the Iroquois and the formulation of plans for a town at the confluence of the Susquehanna. Soon after, the Revolutionary War stunted the town’s growth, and poor relations between the settlers and Native Americans increased. After the Revolutionary War, Northumberland developed substantially and found a sturdy place amongst the Susquehanna’s finest communities.
The table of contents on the right allows for navigation of Northumberland’s history and provides a map of the surrounding area, as well as a works cited and related links page.
