Tenure

Tenure is a condition of employment granted to educators who are defined by statute as eligible for its conferral. See 24 PS § 11-1101(1). Tenure is attained with the issuance of a professional employe contract for a fourth year of employment following the satisfactory completion of a three-year probationary period. Tenure offers significant protections in terms of due process such as notice, hearing and appeal for the employment actions of termination, suspension, and demotion, which may be initiated by a school district. A tenured employee in Pennsylvania is a professional employe, and all professional employes are given the same contract as specified in §11-1121(c) of the School Code.
