Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators

The General Assembly by statute required the Professional Standards and Practices Commission to adopt "The Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators" (Code), which applies to certificated educators. The Code, located in 22 PA Code Chapter 235, contains explicit values for the education profession in Pennsylvania and requires educators to make a moral commitment to uphold these values. The Code covers the subjects of professional practices, conduct, legal obligations, certification, civil rights, improper personal or financial gain, relationships with students, and professional relationships. Educators who violate sections of the Code may be subject to private or public reprimand. Additionally, the Code states: "Violations of the Code may also be used as supporting evidence, though may not constitute an independent basis, for the suspension or revocation of a certificate."
