Board of School Directors.

The board of school directors administers the public school system of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. See 24 PS § 3-301. However, the board must obey the statutes passed by the General Assembly and the regulations of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education. Each school district is controlled by a board of school directors, commonly referred to as the school board. With the exception of the School District of Philadelphia, which has an appointed board, school board members are elected by the registered voters who live in the school district. The board of school directors in school districts of the first class and the first class A is designated as "The Board of Public Education." The board of school directors may be removed from office if it fails to organize or if it refuses or neglects to perform any duty that is imposed upon it by statute, in accordance with the provisions of 24 PS § 3-318. The board of school directors has the duty to maintain elementary schools, See 24 PS § 5-501, and other schools that it establishes, See 24 PS § 5-502. Article V of the Public School Code contains the duties and powers of boards of school directors.
